STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (1-0-0) came out of the season opener with a 1-0 victory over St. Catherine (0-1-0) on Tuesday evening.
The teams played to a scoreless in the first half with UWSP starting goalkeeper
Jocelyn Blahnik (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) posting two saves, including a diving one-handed swipe in the 29th minute.
Rita Danner (West Des Moines, Iowa/Waukee) recorded the lone UWSP shot on goal in the first half.
The visiting Wildcats hit the crossbar in the 59th minute, nearly breaking the draw.
In the 78th minute,
Sofia Jimenez (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) took a free kick from about 25 yards out and lifted it over the wall and past the keeper for the eventual match-winner.
Ainsley Katte (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) made one save in the second half for the Pointers to keep the clean sheet.
The Pointers head to Minnesota on Friday (Sept. 4) for a 3:30 p.m. match at Bethel.
