Softball Splits Non-Conference Games at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (26-12) split a doubleheader at Carthage (20-20) on Monday afternoon. The Pointers won game one, 6-4, before dropping the finale, 13-0, in five innings.
 
Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) had three hits on the day and drew a walk. Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had a hit and two walks with a run driven in and scored once. Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had a home run and a sac fly in game one.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 6, Carthage 4
Thompson homered with one away in the third inning to break the scoreless tie. Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) followed with a single and Roberts drew a walk. Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) ripped a double to left-center pushing home two for a 3-0 lead.
 
Carthage tied the game in the bottom of the frame with three runs on four hits.
 
Stodola started the fourth with a double. Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Ashley LeCavalier (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) got aboard on an infield single. Thompson hit a sac fly as UWSP regained the lead. Schmidt reached on an error as another run scored. Roberts hit an RBI infield single and the lead was 6-3.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) went 2.0 in the start and struck out two. Rizzo pitched 5.0 innings and struck out three.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 0, Carthage 13 (5 inn.)
The Firebirds scored a run on two hits in the first and two more in the second. Carthage broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth.
 
Madsen singled to start the second. Allie Schwirtz (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) hit a double in the third. Stodola and LeCavalier had two-out singles in the fifth. But UWSP couldn't manufacture a rally in any of those innings.
 
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) struck out two in an inning of work. Madeline Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) made her collegiate debut with an inning pitched.
 
The Pointers will host Loras on Tuesday (May 5) at 3:00 p.m. at McCarty Memorial Field to wrap up the regular season.
