STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) tossed a three-hit shutout as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (27-13) split the regular season finale with Loras (27-13). The Pointers fell in game one, 2-0, and Rizzo shut out the Duhawks in game two, 5-0.
Rizzo racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts in game two. She gave up just three hits and walked four.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had three hits on the day, all doubles.
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union),
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and
Allie Schwirtz (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) each had an RBI.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, Loras 2
Loras hit back-to-back solo home runs in the third inning to account for all of the scoring.
Thompson had a two-out double in the fifth, the lone hit for UWSP.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drew a walk in the first, Smith coaxed a walk in the second, Schmidt earned a free pass in the third,
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) worked a base on balls in the fourth and Schmidt again drew a walk in the fifth. But UWSP was unable to get a run across in any inning.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) tossed a complete game. She struck out a season-high 10.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Loras 0
Thompson doubled to start the third inning. Roberts and
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) reached fielder's choices. Smith singled to plate one run. Another scored on a wild pitch.
Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) reached on an error as UWSP went up, 3-0.
Thompson doubled with two away in the fourth. Schmidt followed with an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Madsen hit a double to start the fifth. Two batters later, Schwirtz singled to push Madsen home as UWSP took a 5-0 lead.
Rizzo stranded five runners aboard with just one runner reaching scoring position in the game.
The Pointers face UW-Eau Claire in the opening game of the WIAC Tournament on Friday (May 8) in Oshkosh. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
