Zygowski Breaks NCAA Division III Saves Record as Pointers Sweep UWRF

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior pitcher Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) recorded her 33rd career save breaking the NCAA Division III record as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (25-11, 7-7) swept a doubleheader from UW-River Falls (9-27, 2-11). The Pointers won game one by an 8-2 final before finishing the sweep with a 9-0 victory in six innings in game two.
 
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had five hits on the day with two RBI and three runs scored. Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) and Ashley Lecavalier had four hits each. Lecavalier drove in four and Schmidt had three RBI.
 
The Pointers hit four home runs on Saturday, setting a new single season team record in the category.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 8, UWRF 2
Thompson led off the first with a solo home run as UWSP quickly erased a 1-0 deficit.
 
Lecavalier singled to start the third. She stole second and moved to third on a single by Schmidt. With two away, Schmidt got in a rundown as Lecavalier scored to put UWSP ahead, 2-1.
 
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) drew a walk with one out in the fourth. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on an infield single. Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) launched a three-run home run to put UWSP up, 5-1.
 
Smith began the sixth with a single. Otto walked and Stodola singled to load the bases. Two batters later, Lecavalier singled to push in two runs. Thompson singled to plate another for an 8-2 lead.
 
Zygowski gave up two hits and a walk, but induced a pop up that she handled herself to strand the bases loaded in the seventh to complete the save.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) struck out eight in 4.0 innings to earn the win. Zygowski fanned three in 3.0 innings in the record-setting save.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 9, UWRF 0 (6 inn.)
Thompson singled to start the first inning. Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) and Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) both singled with one away to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
 
Lecavalier homered with one away in the second to up the advantage to 2-0.
 
Schmidt singled to begin the third. Roberts drew a walk and Madsen hit a double to push home one run. Otto singled to plate two runs. Lecavalier singled with two down as the Pointers took a 6-0 lead.
 
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) and Thompson drew consecutive walks to start the sixth. Schmidt followed with a walk-off home run as UWSP completed the run-rule win.
 
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) went 3.0 inning in the start. She allowed just two hits. Rizzo pitched the final 3.0 and struck out four.
 
The Pointers travel to Kenosha for a non-conference doubleheader on Monday (May 4). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. against Carthage.
