Konitzer Becomes Program’s Winningest Coach as Pointers Sweep UWL

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point head softball coach Ryan Konitzer became the program's winningest coach as his Pointers (23-9, 5-5) swept a doubleheader from visiting UW-La Crosse (19-15, 3-6). UWSP got a 6-0 win in game one and took game two by a 7-2 final. Game two's win was Konitzer's 193rd at UWSP passing Dean Shuda for most wins in program history.
 
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) had two hits in each game. She drove in five and scored three runs on the day. Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) both had a hit in each game. Smith drove in two and Thompson scored three times on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWL 0
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) reached on an error to start the first. Thompson walked and Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) moved both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With two away, Schmidt reached on an infield single as both runners crossed the plate.
 
Thompson singled to begin the third. Roberts drew a walk and both moved up on a wild pitch. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on a squeeze bunt to push in one run. Schmidt followed with an RBI groundout at the lead was 4-0.
 
Schmidt singled with one down in the fifth. Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) drew a walk. Smith followed with an RBI single and pinch runner Paige Kislow (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) scored on an overthrow to the plate for a 6-0 lead.
 
Harwood tossed a complete-game two hit shutout. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 7, UWL 2
UWL used a triple and a sacrifice bunt to go up 1-0 in the first.
 
Thompson doubled with one out in the bottom of the first. Roberts drew a walk. Two batters later, Schmidt hit a double to plate both runners. Smith followed with an RBI single as the Pointers went in front, 3-1.
 
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) drew a walk to start the fourth. Ashley Lecavalier reached on a bunt single. A double steal put runners in scoring position. Madsen drove in one with a groundout. The second run scored on a wild pitch.
 
Roberts singled to begin the fifth and stole second. Schmidt singled to put runner on the corners. Another wild pitch scored a run. Zygowski had an RBI single and the Pointers were ahead, 7-1.
 
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) tossed 3.0 innings in the start and struck out one. Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) pitched 4.0 innings and struck out six.
 
The Pointers travel to league frontrunner UW-Oshkosh for the final road games of the regular season on Wednesday (Apr. 29). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
