MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (14-15, 7-11) posted double-figure runs in both games to complete a series sweep at UW-Stout (8-21, 1-17). The Pointers won game one, 14-7, before completing the series sweep with a 12-7 win in game two.
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) hit a grand slam in game one, the third-straight game that a Pointer hit a grand slam in the series. He had five hits and drove in seven on the day.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) had four hits on the day and also had seven driven in.
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) hit a home run in each game and had three RBI on the day.
Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) collected five hits, drove in four and scored three runs.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had four hits and two RBI.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) had three hits in game two and drove in two.
Game 1 – UWSP 14, Stout 7
Stout got on the board in the first inning with two runs on one hit, two walks and a hit batter. The Blue Devils added a run in the second for a 3-0 lead.
Drohner was hit by a pitch to start the third. Oliver followed with a two-run home run. With two outs, Olson drew a walk. Mistele hit a triple to push home Olson to tie the game at 3-3.
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) drew a walk to start the sixth. With two down, Oliver clubbed his second home run of the game to tie it up at 5-5.
Mistele hit a solo home run with one away in the seventh inning.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West) drew a walk.
Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./West) reached on an error. Drohner singled to push home one run. Oliver followed with a two-RBI double as the lead grew to 9-5.
Nystrom homered to lead off the eighth. With two away, Brown walked,
Easton Snow (DeForest, Wis./DeForest Area) singled and Adams drew a walk to load the bases. Drohner crushed a home run to right clearing the bases for a 14-5 lead.
Kaeden Wagenaar (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) went 2.0 frames with three strikeouts.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) tossed 6.0 innings and struck out 10.
Jake Williams (Carol Stream, Ill./Wheaton North) had one strikeout in 1.0 innings of work.
Game 2 – UWSP 12, Stout 7
Drohner and Oliver drew consecutive walks to start the game. Drohner stole two bases to put runners on the corners.
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) reached on a fielder's choice to put UWSP up, 1-0.
Stout scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a walk and a home run.
Nystrom reached on an error to start the fourth. Olson followed with a two-run home run for a 3-2 lead. Mistele singled and stole second base. With two away, Adams hit an RBI single for a 4-2 advantage.
Nystrom singled with two down in the fifth. He stole second and scored on Olson's single. Argersinger drew a walk and a double steal put two in scoring position. Mistele singled to push home both runners for a 7-2 lead.
Snow walked to start the sixth. Singles by Adams and Drohner loaded the bases. A passed ball allowed a run to score to make it 8-2.
Mistele singled with one out in the seventh. Snow reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Adams reached on a bunt single to push the lead to 9-2.
Oliver singled to start the eighth. Two batters later, Nystrom hit a home run for an 11-2 lead. The Pointers tacked on a single unearned run in the ninth without a hit.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) struck out a career-high 13 in 7.0 innings in the start.
Easton Zempel (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
The Pointers start an 11-game homestand to close out the regular season on Wednesday (Apr. 22) with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader against UW-Eau Claire.
