MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (12-15, 5-11) hit a grand slam in each game and posted 37 runs in a sweep at UW-Stout (8-19, 1-15) on Saturday.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) each hit a grand slam in the sweep. Olson and Nystrom had six RBI each on the day. Olson scored six runs in the twin bill.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) hit a three-run home run and had seven RBI and six hits on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 15, Stout 6
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) started the second inning with a walk.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) reached on singles to load the bases. Two batters later, Olson launched a grand slam to put UWSP up, 4-0.
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) continued the frame with a single and stole second. With two away, he scored on a single by
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West).
Stout scored twice in the second and added single tallies in the fourth and the fifth to get within 5-4.
Mistele singled to begin the sixth. He moved up a sac bunt and to third on a balk. Olson singled to push him in. He stole second and third and scored on a throwing error. Drohner drew a walk and stole second. He scored on a single by Oliver to give UWSP an 8-4 lead.
The Blue Devils got single runs in the sixth and the seventh to close the gap to 8-6.
Oliver started a two-out rally with a single in the eighth. Brown and Nystrom hit consecutive singles to plate one run. Ramirez singled to push home another to make it 10-6.
Mistele started the ninth with a single. He moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a flyout. Drohner drew a walk and Oliver belted a three-run home run. Brown drew a walk and Nystrom singled. Ramirez reached on catcher's interference to load the bases. Walks by
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and Mistele pushed home two more runs.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 5.0 innings and struck out five.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) pitched 4.0 innings and earned the save with three strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 22, Stout 9 (7 inn.)
Drohner led off the game with a walk and moved to third on a single by Oliver. Olson reached on a fielder's choice to score the first run. Nystrom doubled to put two in scoring position. A wild pitch plated one run. Brown was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Mistele followed with an RBI single to give UWSP a 3-0 lead.
Stout put up five runs in the bottom of the first on three hits, two walks and an error.
Adams walked to begin the second and stole second. Drohner reached on an error as Adams raced home. After Drohner moved to second on a balk, he scored on another Stout error. Olson singled to put runners on the corners. Nystrom grounded out to push in one run. Ramirez followed with a single to score another. Back-to-back passed balls allowed Ramirez to score. Snow and Oliver had RBI hits to push the lead to 11-5 as UWSP sent 14 hitters to the plate in the inning.
The Pointers scored a run in the third without a hit using two walks and a hit batter in the inning. UWSP did the same in the fourth getting a run on a walk, passed ball and sac fly.
In the fifth, Ramirez walked,
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) was hit by a pitch and Adams walked with two outs to load the bases. Drohner singled to push home two runs. Oliver and Olson drew walks to load the bases. Nystrom ripped a grand slam to left for a 20-6 lead.
Olson drew a walk to start the seventh. Pinch hitter
Brady Martin (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) hit a two-out two-run home run for a 22-8 lead.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 4.0 innings and struck out four.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) pitched 3.0 frames and also struck out four.
The Pointers and Blue Devils close out the series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 19).
