WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-6, 2-2) fell by a 1-0 score in both games of a doubleheader at UW-Whitewater (18-8, 2-2) on Friday. Game two was called due to weather in the sixth inning.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) and
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) hit safely in both games.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) had two hits in game one.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, UWW 1
Madsen singled in the first inning with two away, but was stranded. In the second inning,
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and Harwood had consecutive one-out hits, but remained on base as the frame ended.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a walk to start the fourth. She moved to second and to third on groundouts and was stuck there as the third out was recorded.
Thompson singled to start the sixth. An inning-ending double play halted the Pointers' potential rally. Harwood singled with two away in the seventh, but UWSP came up empty again.
The Warhawks used two hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.
Harwood went 4.0 scoreless frames in the start. She struck out three. Zygowski tossed the final 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 0, UWW 1 (5 inn.)
Thompson and Madsen hit consecutive one-out singles in the first.
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) singled with one away in the second. UWSP couldn't score a run in either frame.
The Warhawks got on the board in the bottom of the second on two hits and a hit batter.
Otto singled to start the fourth inning. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and remained there as the inning ended.
Weather halted the game in the sixth inning and the game was called at that point.
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) pitched 3.0 innings and struck out one.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) pitched 2.0 hitless frames with two strikeouts.
The Pointers will travel to UW-Eau Claire on Tuesday (Apr. 21) for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
