EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-8, 2-4) dropped both games of its doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire (25-9, 5-3) by 3-2 finals.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had five hits on the day and drove in one.
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) and
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had three hits apiece. Smith had an RBI and a runs scored.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWEC 3
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) and
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) had back-to-back two-out singles in the first, but both were stranded in scoring position.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) singled with two away in the fourth inning. Schmidt singled to move Harwood into scoring position. Ashley Lecavalier singled to plate pinch runner
Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) as UWSP went up, 1-0.
UWEC tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth on a walk, a sac bunt and a double. The Blugolds took the lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits, a hit batter and a walk.
Smith singled with two outs in the seventh and moved to third on an error.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) singled to get UWSP within a run. Thompson followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but the Pointers couldn't get the tying run home.
Harwood tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and struck out one.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) had one strikeout over 1.1 innings of relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWEC 3
Schmidt singled to begin the second inning. She moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a two-out double by Smith for a 1-0 lead.
UWEC tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a hit, sac bunt and steal of home. The Blugolds scored twice in the third on three hits to put UWSP in a 3-1 hole.
Otto and Schmidt singled consecutively to start the fourth. Both remained on base in scoring position as the frame ended.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) singled with one away in the seventh. Roberts drew a walk. Thompson doubled to left to push in one run and put two in scoring position. Both were stranded as the game ended.
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) pitched 2.2 innings in the start. Rizzo went 3.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out four.
The Pointers will host UW-Platteville on Saturday (Apr. 25) for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
