MEQUON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-4) picked up win No. 20 with a sweep of North Park (10-16) on Monday. The Pointers got a 6-5 walk-off win in game one and swept the twin bill with a 7-5 win in game two.
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) had a pair of hits in each game. She hit a home run, the walk-off winner in game one, and had two RBI on the day. She drew a pair of walks in game two and scored three runs on the day.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) was the winning pitcher in both games. She pitched 5.1 innings on the day with a pair of strikeouts and no earned runs allowed.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, NPU 5
The Vikings turned a leadoff walk into a run with a two-out single in the third to take a 1-0 lead.
The Pointers answered back in the bottom of the frame.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drew a walk to begin the frame.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) hit a single and a sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on an error as the tying run scored.
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) ripped a double into left-center to plate two more as UWSP went ahead, 3-1.
Schmidt hit a double to start the fourth. With two away, Thompson doubled down the left field line to give UWSP a 4-1 advantage.
Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth. Roberts replaced her at first on a fielder's choice. Roberts stole second and scored on a double by
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) with two outs to push the lead to 5-1.
In the seventh, NPU scored four times on three hits and an error to tie the game at 5-5.
Schmidt hit a solo home run with one away in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) went 4.0 innings in the start with three hits allowed and one run against.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched 2.2 innings and recorded the lone strikeout by UWSP pitching. Rizzo retired the final batter on four pitches and earned the win.
Game 2 – UWSP 7, NPU 5
Rizzo hit a two-out double in the second inning. Schmidt followed with a single up the middle to put UWSP in front, 1-0.
NPU used two walks and two hits, including a bases-clearing triple to take a 3-1 lead.
Again, UWSP answered right back. Stodola led off with a walk. An error put runners on the corners for the Pointers. With two away, a fielding and a throwing error allowed the tying runs to score.
Schmidt doubled to lead off the fourth. Two batters later, Stodola drew a walk and stole second. Roberts singled up the middle to plate both runners for a 5-3 lead.
Otto singled to begin the fifth. Consecutive groundouts moved Otto to third. Schmidt drew a walk. Then a double steal attempt allowed Otto to score for a 6-3 advantage.
Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) started the sixth with a walk. Stodola singled and Roberts hit a single to push in a run for a 7-3 lead.
The Vikings got two runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) went 2.0 innings in the start. Rizzo tossed the final 5.0 innings and struck out two.
The Pointers return to league play with a doubleheader at UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Apr. 15) at 3:00 p.m.
