UWSP Baseball Splits Home Opener with UWRF

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (9-13, 3-9) split the home opener with visiting UW-River Falls (11-11, 5-7) on Friday. The Pointers fell in game one, 13-11, before earning a 10-9 walk-off win in game two.
 
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 3-for-4 in both games with two RBI in each game and three runs scored on the day. Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West) had four hits, all in game two. Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) and Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had three hits apiece on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 11, UWRF 13
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego), Brown and Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) drew three-straight one-out walks in the first to load the bases. Olson hit a sac fly for a 1-0 UWSP lead.
 
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) hit a solo home run to start the second inning to make it 2-0.
 
UWRF tied the game at 2-2 in the third with two runs on two hits and a UWSP error.
 
Brown reached on an error with one down in the fifth. Nystrom and Olson each drew a walk to load the bases. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) doubled to push home all three runners. Drew Mistele (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) and Fink each drew a walk and Drohner ripped a two-run double. With two away, a wild pitch allowed another run to score as UWSP went up, 8-2.
 
The Falcons scored three runs in the sixth to get within 8-5. In the top of the ninth, UWRF plated eight runs on six hits and a pair of errors.
 
Drohner drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Oliver followed with a single. With two away, Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./West) belted a pinch-hit home run to make it 13-11. Olson singled, Argersinger was hit by a pitch and Mistele singled to load the bases, but UWRF coaxed a pop up to thwart the UWSP rally.
 
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 7.0 innings in the start. He struck out four. Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) tossed a hitless frame in relief.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 10, UWRF 9
Mistele hit a two-out solo home run int eh second to give UWSP a 1-0 lead. In the third, Oliver drew a one out walk. Ramirez followed with a two-run shot to left and UWSP was up, 3-0.
 
Ramirez singled to begin the fifth. Brown hit a double to push in Ramirez for a 4-1 lead. UWRF tied the game in the sixth with three runs on four hits. The Falcons plated a run in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
 
In the eighth, Mistele walked with one away and stole second. Drohner hit a double to tie the game at 5-5. Oliver followed with a two-run home run as UWSP went back in front, 7-5.
 
UWRF again posted a big inning in the ninth with four runs on one hit, two walks, two hit batters and an error.
 
Brown led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. Nystrom reached on an error. Olson singled and Argersinger drew a walk to load the bases. Mistele drove in a run with a groundout to tie it at 9-9. After Fink was intentionally walked to load the bases. Drohner hit a walk-off single.
 
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 6.0 innings in the start. He struck out two. Ethan Winkler (Appleton, Wis./East) had three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of relief. Jaycob Dittmer (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) tossed the ninth and picked up with first collegiate win.
 
The Pointers and Falcons conclude the weekend series on Saturday (April 11) beginning at 11:00 a.m.
