Pointers Sweep Stout with Walk-Off, Shutout in League Opener

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (18-4, 2-0) opened league play with a sweep of UW-Stout (13-11, 0-2) on Friday. The Pointers earned a 5-4 walk-off win in 12 innings in game one and notched a 2-0 win in game two. The game one win was Ryan Konitzer's 200th win as a head coach (13 wins at Alverno, 187 wins at UWSP).
 
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel), Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford), Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) each had three hits in game one. Thompson had three RBI on the day. Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had three hits on the day and scored a run in each game.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 5, Stout 4 (12 inn.)
Stout took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on two hits, a walk and an error. The Blue Devils added a run in the third and another in the fourth to put UWSP in a 4-0 hole.
 
Schmidt singled with one out in the fourth. Roberts drew a walk with two away. Thompson singled to push home one run. Madsen singled to drive in another as UWSP got within 4-2.
 
Schmidt drew a walk to start the sixth and moved to second on a groundout. With two down, Thompson singled to get UWSP within 4-3.
 
Otto doubled to begin the seventh. Pinch runner Amelia Brinkman (New Richmond, WIs./New Richmond) moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) reached on an error as the tying run came home.
 
The game remained tied until the 12th inning. Schmidt hit a single to lead off the 12th. Two batters later, Roberts singled to put runners on the corners. Thompson drew a walk to load the bases. Madsen singled up the single as UWSP completed the comeback with a walk-off win.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) went 3.0 innings in the start and struck out two. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) tossed the next 8.0 frames with five strikeouts to become just the second pitcher in program history with 400 career strikeouts. Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) earned the win with a scoreless frame in the 12th.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 2, Stout 0
Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) started the third inning with a single. She moved to second on a sac bunt and scored as Roberts drilled a triple to right. Thompson followed with a sac fly as UWSP took a 2-0 lead.
 
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) tossed 4.0 scoreless frames in the start. She struck out one. Rizzo pitched the final 3.0 to earn the save. She struck out two. Pointers' pitching held Stout scoreless over the final 15 innings on the day.
 
The Pointers will take on North Park in Mequon on Monday (Apr. 13) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
