WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point softball senior
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) tied the NCAA Division III record for career saves as the Pointers (16-4) swept a doubleheader from St. Norbert (9-9) on Wednesday. UWSP took game one in run-rule fashion, 12-0, before finishing the sweep with an 8-2 win in game two.
Zygowski tossed three scoreless innings in relief in game two to record her 32nd career save, tying the NCAA DIII and WIAC all-time record. It was her fifth save of the season which leads the nation this season, a feat she has achieved each of the last two seasons.
Game 1 – UWSP 12, SNC 0 (5 inn.)
UWSP's offense set the tone for the day ripping off eight runs in the first inning of game one.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead),
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and
Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) each hit a home run in the eight-run first inning.
Harwood singled to start the third inning. Two batters later, Hafermann singled to left. With two down,
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) drew a walk to load the bases.
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 10-0.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) singled with one out in the fourth.
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) followed with a single.
Kaitlyn Foster (Foreston, Minn./Foley) drove in her first career run with a single.
Hattie Ulrich (Indus, Minn./Falls) recorded her first career RBI with a groundout to make it 12-0.
Harwood tossed 3.0 innings of one-hit ball in the start. She struck out two. Rizzo recorded four strikeouts over the final 2.0 innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 8, SNC 2
The Green Knights got on the board with a run in the top of the first off a hit batter and a single.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) singled to start the bottom of the first. Thompson drew a walk and Madsen Singled to tie the game at 1-1. Otto grounded out to drive in another run. Zygowski doubled to right for a 3-1 UWSP lead.
Roberts crushed a solo home run with two outs in the second to up the lead to 4-1. The teams traded runs in the third as UWSP maintained a 5-2 lead.
Rizzo walked to begin the fourth. She moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. Thompson singled to drive her home for a 6-2 advantage.
Rizzo singled to start the sixth. Two batters later, Thompson walloped a two-run homer to left to make it 8-2.
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) went 4.0 innings in the start. She struck out six. Zygowski fanned four in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the save.
The Pointers open conference play at home on April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. against UW-Stout.
