Pointers Open the Season with a Win at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis.— The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened the season with a 9-4 win over Marian University (1-4) on Friday afternoon. 

Addison Novack (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) netted her first collegiate goal, and her first on the day, at 13:03 on a player-up opportunity. Marian answered back at 11:29 to tie the game. Novack scored her second goal of the game to give the Pointers the lead back at 3:28. Katie Wigen (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) recorded her first collegiate goal at 2:29 with an assist from Abbey Boersma (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) to extend the Pointers' lead to 3-1 heading into the second quarter.  

Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) opened the second quarter with a player-down goal at 13:26. Barrie Bahr (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) extended the scoring run at 11:00 with an assist from Van Dyke. Marian netted their second goal of the game at 7:03 to get within three goals. Kaelyn Deutsch (Green Bay, Wis./De Pere) found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal at 4:12 with another assist from Van Dyke. Marian closed out the first half with a goal at 0:42, with the Pointers leading 6-3 going into halftime.  

Novack completed her first collegiate hat-trick at 12:43 to open the third quarter. Violet Mueller (Minneapolis, Minn./Roosevelt) broke the strong defensive stand by both teams at 4:28 with an assist from Novack. Marian closed out the third quarter scoring at 2:17 with a player-up free-position goal. 

The third quarter defensive stand continued into the fourth quarter, halting the Pointers from scoring until Bahr netted her second of the game at 9:42 off an assist from Van Dyke. Another strong defensive stand, from both teams, ran out the rest of the game. 

Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) was in net, making nine saves in 60 minutes of play.  

The Pointers remain on the road, taking on Concordia (Wis.) on Wednesday (Mar. 11). Opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
