CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (10-4) picked up two more wins on Thursday in action in Florida. UWSP defeated Plymouth State (3-6) by a 1-0 final in the first game. In game two, the Pointers run-ruled Framingham State (1-7) in six innings, 14-3.
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) had three hits and drove in a career-high five with two runs scored in game two. Hailee Thomspson had five hits with four RBI and a run scored on the day.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville), Racheal Madsen and
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) had three hits apiece on the day. Roberts and Madsen scored three times each in game two. Schmidt scored the lone run in game one.
Pitching once again dominated the day for the Pointers.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) combined for a two-hit shutout in game one.
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) and
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) did not allow an earned run against in six innings in game two.
Game 1- UWSP 1, PSU 0
Madsen singled and stole second in the first inning, but was stranded. Harwood singled in the second and was erased in an inning-ending double play.
Schmidt doubled to start the third. With two away, Thompson dropped a double into right field to plate the only run of the game.
UWSP had a runner on in the fourth and again in the sixth but UWSP couldn't extend the lead in either frame.
Harwood and Zygowski needed just the single run to pin down the win. Harwood went 5.0 innings in the start and allowed just two bunt singles. She struck out four. Zygowski tossed 2.0 hitless innings with two strikeouts to earn the save.
Game 2 – UWSP 14, FSU 3 (6)
Roberts drew a walk to begin the game. Thompson singled and Madsen drew a walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice and a pick off left two on with two outs for Roepke. She singled up the middle to put UWSP ahead, 1-0.
Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) was hit by a pitch with one away in the second. Roberts singled to put two aboard. Thompson then tripled to center for a 3-0 advantage.
Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) drew a leadoff walk in the fourth. Two batters later, Roberts singled and Thompson followed with a base hit to load the bases. With two down,
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a walk to push in a run. Roepke singled to plate two more. Schmidt followed with an RBI single and a double steal gave UWSP an 8-0 lead.
The Rams got on the board in the fifth with three runs on three hits and an error to extend the game.
Madsen started the sixth with a singled. Otto was hit by a pitch and Roepke doubled to plate both runners. Two batters later, Roepke scored on an error\. Hafermann, Roberts and Thompson added RBI singles with two outs to make it 14-3.
Kreuser went 5.0 innings in the start and struck out five. Rizzo tossed a hitless frame with two strikeouts.
The Pointers close out play in Florida on Friday (Mar. 20) with games against Fredonia and Ramapo at 1:45 and 4:00 p.m. ET, respectively.
