CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-4) blasted five home runs and tossed the second no-hitter of the week to finish the week in Florida with a 6-0 mark. UWSP no-hit Fredonia (3-8) in the first game with a 4-0 win. In game two, the Pointers hit three home runs in the seventh innings to earn a 4-1 win over Ramapo (10-3).
Pitchers
Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) and
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) combined for their second no-hitter of the week in the win over Fredonia.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) limited Ramapo to five hits and one run in the finale.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel),
Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford),
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), Zygowski and
Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) all homered on the day. Thompson, Otto and Harwood had two hits apiece on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Fredonia 0
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) reached on an error to begin the game. She stole second and moved to third on a single by Thompson. She scored on a double steal as UWSP took a 1-0 lead.
Thompson belted a home run with one away in the third. Madsen followed with a solo home run as the lead expanded to 3-0.
Roberts drew a walk to begin the fifth. She stole second and scored on a Fredonia error.
In the sixth, right fielder
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) cut down a batter at first to keep the no-hitter in tact.
Kreuser went 4.0 innings in the start. She struck out three and walked one batter, the lone base runner for Fredonia. Rizzo went the final 3.0 to earn the save. She struck out four to preserve the no-hitter.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, Ramapo 1
Harwood singled to start the third and doubled with one out in the fifth, but UWSP couldn't capitalize in either frame.
Ramapo used a walk, a sac bunt and a double to take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Otto started the seventh with a solo home run to tie the game. Zygowski followed and hit the second back-to-back home of the day for a 2-1 lead. Harwood drew a walk with one away. Hafermann then hit her first career home run to extend the lead to 4-1.
Harwood pitched 4.0 innings in the start and struck out seven. Zygowski tossed the final 3.0 frames to earn the win. She struck out four.
The Pointers return to Wisconsin to host Loras on March 28 in the home opener. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
