UWSP Baseball Picks Up First Win in Split with IIT

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (1-2) earned its first win of the season in a split with Illinois Tech (2-1) on Saturday. The Pointers took game one by a 6-1 final and fell in the series finale by a 5-1 score.
 
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) collected five hits on the day. He had an RBI and a run scored in the game one win. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) had two hits in game two. Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) and Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a hit in each game.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 6, IIT 1
Argersinger drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first. Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) Singled to put runners on the corners. Olson and Oliver hit back-to-back RBI singles. Two batters later, Easton Snow (DeForest, Wis./DeForest Area) drove in a run with a groundout as UWSP led, 3-0, after one.
 
Oliver drew a two-out walk in the third. An IIT error extended the inning and put runners at the corners. Snow ripped a double down the right field line to push the lead to 5-0.
 
Ramirez hit a double with one down in the fourth. With two away, he stole third and scored on an error.
 
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) threw 4.0 no-hit innings in the start. He struck out four. Ethan Winkler (Appleton, Wis./East) earned the win with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts. Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) notched the save by tossing the final 3.0 with a strikeout and no runs against.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 1, IIT 5
Argersinger and Olson had singles in the first inning and both were stranded. Argersinger singled and Soule drew a walk in the fifth, but again both were aboard as the inning ended.
 
IIT took the lead with a run in the fourth. The Scarlet Hawks added three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.
 
Olson reached on an infield single to start the eighth. Oliver and Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./West) drew walks to load the bases. But all three were stranded as the inning ended.
 
In the ninth, Ramirez drew a leadoff walk. With two down, Olson singled to put two aboard. Oliver followed with a double to get UWSP on the board.
 
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 6.2 innings in the start. He struck out five and gave up just two hits. Keltin Opper (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) and Jaycob Dittmer (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) each pitched 1.0 innings with two strikeouts apiece.
 
The Pointers head back to Indiana on Saturday (March 7) for games against Carroll and Franklin at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. ET.
