Women’s Basketball Erases Double-Digit Deficit in Fourth Quarter at Stout

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-7, 2-7) erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter in a 74-66 win at UW-Stout (10-10, 1-8) on Wednesday.
 
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) and Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) both had double-doubles for the Pointers. Rice had game-highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds. Smith posted 20 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) was also in double figures with 11 points.
 
Rice and Smith combined for the first seven points as UWSP went up, 7-3. Hagen had four points and Laney Panich (Wautoma, Wis./Wautoma) hit a late three as the Pointers led, 16-12, after one.
 
Smith and Rice hit a combined three three-pointers in the second quarter. A late layup by Smith tied the game at 31-31 at the break.
 
Jessilyn Ernst (Pardeeville, Wis./Pardeeville) had three points early in the third quarter. Rice and Smith combined for 10 points in the stanza. Emma Kilpatrick (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, but UWSP trailed, 56-48, heading to the fourth.
 
Smith buried a three in the opening minute of the fourth as UWSP began the comeback from an 11-point deficit. Rice completed an and-one and had the next seven UWSP points. Hagen and Rice had four points each as UWSP took a 66-63 lead with 2:08 to go. The Pointers went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe to close out the comeback win.
 
UWSP will be home on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 3:00 p.m. against UW-Eau Claire for the annual Pink Game. A silent auction will be held in the lobby through halftime.
