UWSP Softball Splits Twin Bill with Edgewood

RHINELANDER, Wis. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point softball team (3-1) split a doubleheader against Edgewood (2-2) on Thursday. UWSP got a walk-off run-rule win, 8-0, in five innings in game one. Edgewood got a 2-1 walk-off win in the ninth inning of game two.

Pitching was the showcase of Thursday's doubleheader. Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) combined for 13.1 innings and gave up just six hits over the two games. The trio racked up 21 strikeouts and walked just two batters.

Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) and Katilyn Roberts had two hits each on the day. Thompson and Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) each had a home run.

Game 1 – UWSP 8, Edgewood 0 (5)
Thompson launched the first pitch in the bottom of the first out to left field for an early 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Madsen belted her first home run in a UWSP uniform to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth, Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy) drew a one-out walk. Amelia Brinkman (New Richmond, WIs./New Richmond) beat out a bunt for a single to put two aboard. Thompson followed with an RBI single up the middle. A fielding error continued the inning. Madsen drove in a run with a groundout for a 5-0 lead. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a walk and pinch hitter Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) ripped a two-run double to left-center for a 7-0 lead. Allie Schwirtz (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) walked off the run-rule win with a single to left, her first collegiate hit.

Harwood went 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win. She struck out six and allowed just one hit. Zygowski picked up the save with three strikeouts in an inning of work.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, Edgewood 2 (9)
In the top of the fourth, Thompson drew a lead off walk. Roberts singled to left-center to put two aboard. The Eagles recorded two outs at third on fielder's choice plays to keep UWSP off the board.

In the bottom of the seventh, Edgewood coaxed a pair of walks around a single to load the bases. With two down, right fielder Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) cut down the batter at first to end the inning.

The Pointers broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the eighth. Ashley LeCavalier (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) singled to put runners on the corners with no out. An errant pickoff throw to third allowed the go-ahead run to score.

Edgewood tied the game with two away in the bottom of the eighth with a sac bunt and a groundout. The Eagles got the walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth on a single.

Kreuser went 5.0 frames with nine strikeouts. She allowed just two hits and didn't give up an earned run. Zygowski went 3.0 frames with three strikeouts.

The Pointers face MSOE in a doubleheader on Friday (Feb. 27) beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Rhinelander.
