Otto Mashes Pair of Homers as Pointers Split DH Versus MSOE

RHINELANDER, Wis. – The No. 13 UW- Stevens Point softball team (4-2) split a twin bill with MSOE (1-3) on Friday.  UWSP dropped game one, 3-0, before rallying for a 14-1 five inning run-rule win in game two.
 
Senior Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) blasted two home runs and drove in a career-high five in the game two win. Twelve different Pointers collected a hit in the win.
 
UWSP's pitching again dominated the day. Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington), Mallorie Kreuser (Verona, Wis./Verona) and Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) tossed 12.0 innings with just one earned run against. The quartet combined for 10 strikeouts.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 0, MSOE 3
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) singled and Rachael Madsen (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) doubled in the first, but UWSP was unable to get a run in the frame.
 
MSOE got three unearned runs in the top of the third on just one hit in the inning.
 
In the bottom of the third, Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) hit a two-out double. Roberts drew a walk and both were stranded.
 
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Zygowski followed with a single and both moved into scoring position on a fly out. Allie Schwirtz (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) worked a 12-pitch walk to load the bases. Thompson lifted a deep fly to right, but the ball landed in the fielder's glove to end the rally.
 
Harwood went 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit. She struck out three. Zygowski tossed the final 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and just one hit against.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 14, MSOE 1 (5)
Roberts drew a walk to begin game two. She moved the second on a wild pitch and to third on an error as Madsen reached. Thompson and Schmidt hit consecutive sac flies to put UWSP ahead, 2-0. Schwirtz and Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) hit back-to-back singles. Otto stepped up and launched her first home run of the day for a 5-0 lead.
 
Schwirtz drew a leadoff walk in the third. Two batters later, Otto crushed her second home run of the game to extend the lead to 7-0. Two batters later, Cora Stodola (Mishicot, Wis./Mishicot) hit a pinch-hit solo home run, her first collegiate hit.
 
Madsen singled to start the fourth and moved to second on a throwing error. She stole third and scored on a single by Thompson.
 
The Raiders scored a run in the fourth on two hits and a walk.
 
In the fifth, Kaitlyn Foster (Foreston, Minn./Foley) hit a pinch-hit single, her first hit as a Pointer. Madeline Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) reached on an error with Foster scoring on the play. Roberts, Aubrey Hafermann (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Springs Academy), Schmidt and Rizzo all had hits five runs crossing the plate in the frame for a 14-1 lead.
 
Kreuser went 4.0 innings with two strikeouts. Rizzo pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning with a strikeout.
 
 The Pointers travel to Illinois for the Millikin Invite beginning on March 7 at 11:00 a.m. against host Millikin.
