WHITEWATER, Wis. – For the first time since 2017, the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (15-9, 4-9) earned a road win at UW-Whitewater (18-6, 8-5) getting a 66-63 win over the 14th-ranked Warhawks on Wednesday.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) recorded a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) led all scorers with 20 points.
Emma Kilpatrick (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and
Jessilyn Ernst (Pardeeville, Wis./Pardeeville) both posted double digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Smith, Rice and Kilpatrick all hit a three in the first quarter. A jumper by Kilpatrick tied the game at 19-19 after one quarter.
Smith and Rice combined for three three-point makes to start the second quarter. Rice and Ernst had four points each and the game remained tied, 36-36, at the half.
Ernst had UWSP first four points of the third quarter. Smith hit a pair of threes and Kilpatrick made two free throws and the Pointers had a 48-47 edge heading to the fourth.
Rice halted a 4-0 start to the fourth by UWW with a jumper. Kilpatrick, Rice and Smith combined for the next seven UWSP points for a 57-54 advantage. Rice completed an and-one with 90 seconds remaining for a 61-58 lead. Rice and
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) went 2-for-2 each from the free-throw line as the lead reached five with 17 seconds remaining. Kilpatrick made a free throw in the closing seconds as UWSP held on for the win.
The Pointers face UW-Oshkosh at home on Saturday (Feb. 21) in the regular season finale. Tip off in Berg Gym is set for 3:00 p.m.
