LA CROSSE, Wis. – Senior
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) became the 23rd player in program history with 1,000 career points as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-9, 3-9) fell at UW-La Crosse (18-8, 8-4).
Rice led all scorers with 18 points on the day.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) was also in double figures for the Pointers with 11 points.
Emma Kilpatrick (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) had a team-best 11 rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double with nine points.
Smith and Rice each hit a three early as UWSP led, 8-7.
Jessilyn Ernst (Pardeeville, Wis./Pardeeville) had four points, but the Pointers trailed, 18-12, after one.
Kilpatrick and
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) each made a jumper as UWL built an 11-point lead.
Kate Vanden Berg (Appleton, Wis./North) drilled a three and Rice added five points.
Laney Panich (Wautoma, Wis./Wautoma) buried a three at the buzzer as UWSP got within 35-29 at the break.
Panich, Kilpatrick and Rice combined for six-straight as the Pointers tied the game at 35-35. Rice made a layup to tie the game at 37-37 to reach 1,000 career points. Rice had six more points in the quarter and Kilpatrick had the other five as the Pointers led, 48-46, heading to the fourth.
Smith hit a three early and Ernst had four points for a 55-52 lead. Smith nailed another three-pointer.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) made a layup with 2:34 to go to tie the game at 61-61. UWL made three free throws and both teams went scoreless from the field the rest of the way.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Feb. 18) for the final road game of the regular season. Tip off is set for 7:00 p.m.
