RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The No. 18 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (17-5, 7-4) saw its comeback bid spoiled by a buzzer-beater as host UW-River Falls (8-14, 3-8) got a70-69 win over the Pointers.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led all scorers with 24 points.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) was also in double figures with 19.
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Miron and Combs combined for six points out of the gate. Combs added another jumper, but the Falcons pulled ahead, 23-10. Miron hit a three and Butler got on the scoresheet with a bucket.
Drew Daoust (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) hit a three to get the Pointers within 32-22 with just over two minutes left in the half. Butler scored five points in the final minute, including a three at the buzzer, as UWSP trailed, 32-27, at the break.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) had five points early in the second half as UWSP got within a possession. Miron gave UWSP a lead with three. Butler and Miron each hit again from behind the arc, but the Pointers couldn't shake the Falcons.
Butler scored eight-straight UWSP points and a
Max Raimer (Sun Prairie, Wis./East) three got the Pointers close at 67-66 with 3:25 to go. Miron hit a pair of free throws with 1:23 remaining for a 69-68 lead. The Falcons spoiled the comeback with a close-range jumper at the buzzer to claim the win.
The Pointers are back home to face UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 14). Tip off in Quandt Fieldhouse is set for 5:00 p.m.
