Early Goal Sets Tone as Men’s Hockey Wins Non-Conference Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (7-8-2) scored just 34 seconds into Saturday's game and went on to a 5-2 win over Saint John's (8-4-3) in the non0conference finale.
 
Gabe Randel (Hortonville, Wis.) gave the Pointers the early lead with his first goal of the game. Owen Dean (Calgary, Alberta) provided the assist on the goal.
 
In the final minute of the period, Randel again scored a goal for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Hintz (Rockford, Ill.) and Quinton Hill (Coquitlam, B.C.) had assists.
 
Bennett Koupal (Sioux Falls, S.D.) pushed the lead to 3-0 at 11:10 of the second period. Aiden Moser (Bismark, N.D.) and Alex Johnson (Calgary, Alberta) had assists on the goal.
 
The Johnnies got a power-play goal at 13:32 of the second period as a ricochet off the boards put an SJU skater in front of an open net.
 
Again in the final minute of the second period, the Pointers got a goal, this time from Hill. Camden Markham (Houghton, Mich.) and Randel had assists as UWSP led 4-1 after two periods.
 
SJU got another goal at 15:36 of the third period after pulling the goalie for an extra attacker.
 
The Johnnies did it again and Joseph Manning (Stillwater, Minn.) scored an empty-net goal from the UWSP defensive zone at 18:21 of the third to ice the game.
 
UWSP goaltender Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) made 25 saves to earn the win. SJU goaltender Jon Howe had 37 saves.
 
The Pointers head to Menomonie on Friday (Jan. 23) to begin a home-and-home weekend against UW-Stout. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m.
