WHEATON, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (7-4) finished an unbeaten weekend at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational with a sweep of Concordia University Chicago (2-5) and a 3-1 win over host Wheaton (9-3).
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) became just the 12th player in program history with 1,000 career digs, surpassing the milestone with 16 on the day.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had team highs of six and 17 kills on the day.
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) was in double-figure assists in both matches with 21 and 15.
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) led all players with 25 assists against Wheaton.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, CUC 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22)
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) combined for five kills and Grabarski added a block as UWSP jumped in front 12-4 in the first.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a kill and an ace on the ends of a 6-1 burst as the Pointers led 20-11. Thomka secured the first set with a set-ending kill.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) served up three-consecutive aces as the Pointers went up 12-7 in the second. Kempinger had four kills late as UWSP rolled to the set two win.
Shaw had a block and a kill as UWSP played from behind early in the third.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had three kills in a 5-1 run as UWSP got within 19-18.
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) and Thomka combined on two blocks as the Pointers finished the sweep with a 6-1 run at the end.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Wheaton 1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15)
Cregan had two kills and two aces as the Pointers jumped in front 10-2 in the first. Shaw had four kills down the stretch as UWSP eased to the first-set win.
Thomka, Larson and Cregan had two kills each as UWSP doubled up Wheaton, 10-5, to start the second. Shaw had three kills and a Thomka ace gave UWSP set point. But the Thunder finished with a 4-1 burst to tie the match at 1-1.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) had consecutive aces amid an 8-0 run as the Pointers went up 11-6 in the third. Shaw had a pair of kills as UWSP maintained the lead, 20-12. Cregan had a kill and ended the set win with an ace.
Thomka, Larson, Shaw and Paukner combined for five kills in an 8-3 start for the Pointers in the fourth set. Cregan had a trio of kills and Shaw added a pair as the lead reached 21-11.
Jadynn Gruner (Portage, Wis./Portage) had two kills late as UWSP took the match in four.
The Pointers open league play with the home opener on Friday (Sept. 19) at 7:00 p.m. versus UW-River Falls.
