COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (1-3) fell in both matches on Saturday at the Pikes Peak Challenge. The Pointers were swept by East Texas Baptist (3-0) before dropping a 3-1 decision to host Colorado College (2-2).
Freshman
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) notched a second double-double of the season with 22 assists and 17 digs against CC.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also had 17 digs versus the hosts.
Samantha Kempinger (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Pointers in kills in both matches totaling 13 on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, ETBU 3 (13-25, 13-25, 9-25)
Strege had a kill to open the match and UWSP led 2-0. Kempinger added four kills and
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had two kills as ETBU took the opening set.
Sadie Grabarski (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee Community) recorded two early kills as UWSP jumped ahead, 5-2. Paukner had back-to-back blocks as UWSP ended an 8-0 run by ETBU. Paukner and Grabarski each added another kill as UWSP fell into a 2-0 hole.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) had two kills and Kempinger added a kill and a block as ETBU cruised to a third-set win and the sweep.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, CC 3 (18-25, 18-25, 25-22, 17-25)
Kempinger,
Jaiden Schneiderman (German Valley, Ill./Forreston) and
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) combined for eight kills early in the first.
Maggie O'Brien (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) had a kill and a block as the Pointers fell in the opening set.
Schneiderman had three kills and Paukner added two in the second set.
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic), Paukner and Larson each had an ace, but UWSP fell behind 2-0 in the match.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) had two kills early in the third set. Larson served up consecutive aces as the set was tied 17-17. Paukner had a kill and an ace for a 20-19 edge. Larson finished the set win with a kill.
Savanna Moe (Saint Paul, Minn/St. Croix Lutheran Academy) served an ace for a 3-2 lead in the fourth. CC rattled off an 15-4 run to put UWSP in a big hole. Hyland added a kill and Strege served an ace in a 4-0 burst by the Pointers. Larson added two more kills down the stretch as UWSP was unable to force a fifth set.
The Pointers return to Wisconsin to face Lakeland and St. Norbert in De Pere at the WAIC/NACC Quad beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 2).
