DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (3-3) need five sets in the nightcap to sweep matches at the WIAC/NACC Quad on Tuesday night. UWSP defeated host St. Norbert (4-1) in four sets before prevailing in five sets against Lakeland (2-3).
Freshman
Hannah Strege (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) continued her impressive start with double-doubles in both matches. Against SNC, she recorded 38 assists and 10 digs. She upped those totals against the Muskies with 54 assists and 19 digs, both team highs.
Fellow freshman
Logan Cregan (Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area) registered her first career double-double against Lakeland with 14 kills and 18 digs.
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was in double-figure digs in both matches with 17 and 18.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted double-digit kills in both matches with 10 and 17.
Game 1 – UWSP 3, SNC 1 (25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-13)
Thomka had a block and a kill consecutively to give UWSP a 5-3 lead in the first set.
Olivia Paukner (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had a block, a kill and an aces over a four-point span as the Pointers went ahead, 16-11.
Jaiden Schneiderman (German Valley, Ill./Forreston) added a pair of late kills as UWSP took the opening set.
Delilah Hyland (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) and Cregan each had a pair of kills in a 6-1 burst as UWSP tied the second set at 16-16. Thomka had two kills and Hyland added a solo block. Schneiderman again scored two late kills to seal the second set for UWSP.
Katie Larson (Hammond, Wis./St. Croix Central) had four kills early in the third as UWSP went ahead, 11-7. Thomka and Schneiderman sandwiched a three-point run as the set was tied late. The Green Knights scored the final three points to win the third set.
Thomka and Hyland had two blocks each and Thomka and Schneiderman combined for five kills as the Pointers jumped out to a 14-6 lead. Strege had a kill and a block and
Emma Ballweg (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) added to kills late as UWSP won the match in four sets.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, Lakeland 2 (24-26, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8)
Thomka opened the match with consecutive kills and had five by the time UWSP led, 16-12. Nevins served an ace and Thomka added another kill late, but the Muskies rallied to take the first set.
Thomka, Strege and Cregan combined for seven kills as Lakeland stayed close at 11-10. Hyland had a trio of kills as the Pointers used a 5-1 run to go ahead, 16-12. Cregan had two kills late as UWSP evened the match at 1-1.
Nevins and
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) each had an ace as the Pointers began the third in front, 13-10.
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) and Hyland had consecutive kills, but Lakeland pulled away late to take the third set.
Thomka had three kills and a block as UWSP opened the fourth with a 5-2 lead. Cregan, Trieloff and Jadyn Gruner combined for nine kills as the lead grew to 19-10. Cregan and Trieloff each added a late kill as UWSP forced a fifth set.
Cregan and Trieloff had three kills each as the Pointers jumped in front early to win the fifth set.
The Pointers are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 6) against Marian at 10:00 a.m. and WashU at 3:00 p.m. in Oshkosh.
