LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-23, 10-16) fell in both games of Friday's doubleheader at No. 10 UW-La Crosse (31-7, 21-5). The Pointers dropped game one, 7-2, and fell in game two, 5-1.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) led the UWSP offense with three hits on the day. He drove in one. Tyler Soulle and
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had two hits apiece. Soule scored a run in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWL 7
Oliver singled in the third and again in the sixth, the only base runner for the Pointers over the first six innings of the game. Meanwhile, UWL got a single run in the fourth and the fifth to put UWSP behind, 2-0.
The Eagles broke the game open in the sixth with three runs on three hits and a UWSP error.
Soule doubled with one down in the seventh. Tomczak singled to put runners on the corners.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) grounded out to drive in one run.
Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) followed with a single to plate another as the Pointers got within 5-2.
UWL got both runs back in the bottom of the seventh with just one hit after a pair of walks.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 5.2 innings in the start. He struck out five and allowed just one earned run.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego) tossed 1.1 frames in relief.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 5
UWSP got a runner on base in the first, second and third, but trailed 1-0 heading to the fourth.
Soule led off the fourth with a double. Olson followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Oliver hit a sac fly to tie the game at 1-1.
UWL regained the lead with a run in the fourth. The Eagles increased the deficit with two runs in the sixth. Another run in the seventh for UWL completed the scoring.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) went 5.0 in the start. He struck out four.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) pitched the final 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.
The Pointers close out the regular season with a doubleheader at UWL on Saturday (May 3). First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
