LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-25, 10-18) saw its season end with a pair of run-rule losses at No. 10 UW-La Crosse (33-7, 23-5) on Saturday. UWSP dropped game one, 15-4, and game two, 14-1, both in seven innings.
Seniors
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) had a hit in each game. Tomczak drove in a run and Martell scored once in each game.
Brennan Huber (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) had three hits, all in game one, and drove in two.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) also had a hit in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWL 15 (7 inn.)
UWL set the tone for the day with nine runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Olson singled with one away in the second. With two away, Martell reached on an infield single. Huber doubled down the line, but UWSP got just one in the frame.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) singled to start the fourth. Martell walked and Huber singled to load the bases.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) singled to plate one. Tomczak hit a sac fly to drive in another as UWSP made it 11-3.
Soule led off the fifth with a single. Two batters later, Oliver drew a walk. With two down, Huber singled to push in the final run of the game for UWSP.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) made his final start and lasted just 0.2 innings.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) pitched 5.0 innings of relief striking out two.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 14 (7 inn.)
Martell tripled with one out in the first.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) drove him in with a groundout as UWSP led, 1-0.
UWL put up two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. The Eagles tacked on eight in the fourth and four in the sixth to run away with the win.
Paulsen ends his career with 198 career strikeouts, sixth most in UWSP history. Beyer made his 67th career appearance, tied for the second-most in program history.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego) pitched an inning in game two, his 55th career appearance, eighth-most in Pointers' history.
