ANGOLA, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (31-14) dropped the opening game of the NCAA Tournament Super Regional round at No. 5 Trine (40-5) by a 7-0 final.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had the Pointers' lone hit of the game.
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) worked a walk, the fourth of the season given up by Trine starter Alexis Michon.
UWSP starting pitcher
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) worked out a jam in the first inning stranding the bases loaded as the game went to the second scoreless.
In the third, a fielding miscue by UWSP opened the door for the Thunder. Trine scored four runs on three hits and a pair of walks in the frame.
A walk, two hits and another UWSP error allowed the Thunder to push the deficit to 6-0 in the fifth. Trine added a single run in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Harwood pitched 4.0 innings and had three strikeouts.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) faced three batters.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) pitched the final 2.0 and struck out two.
The Pointers and Thunder play game two of the Super Regionals on Friday (May 23) at 1:00 p.m. ET. If UWSP wins that game, a decisive game three begins at 3:30 p.m. ET.
