Klicker Becomes Steals Leader as Pointers’ Postseason Run Ends

ANGOLA, Ind. – Senior Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) set yet another school record as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (31-16) saw its postseason run come to an end with a 3-1 loss to No. 5 Trine (41-5) in the NCAA Tournament Super Regionals on Friday.

Klicker swiped the only base of the game for UWSP and moved atop the career list with her 59th career stolen base to break a tie with former teammate Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek).

Klicker also recorded two hits and scored the UWSP run in the game. Fellow senior Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) had an RBI single.

The Thunder took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits and a walk, but Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) limited the damage stranding the bases loaded.

Klicker singled with one away in the bottom of the first and stole the record-setting base in the inning.

Trine added a single run in the third on a solo home run to put UWSP behind, 2-0.

Klicker doubled to begin the fourth. Baker followed with a single as the Pointers cut the deficit in half.

The Pointers got a runner aboard in the fifth, the sixth and again in the seventh, but were unable to close the gap.

Trine added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.

Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) struck out one in 0.2 innings of work. Zygowski and Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) had three strikeouts apiece in working 3.2 and 2.2 innings, respectively.

The Pointers made their first back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament since the 1998 and 199 seasons. This week was the first-ever trip to the Super Regional round for the Pointers. As a team, the Pointers set a program record with 116 stolen bases this season.
