STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (9-11, 5-5) posted 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep of UW-Eau Claire (6-15, 0-10) in the first home games of the season. The Pointers won game one, 12-4, before finishing the sweep with an 8-1 victory in game two.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had four hits in game one, three of which were doubles, and drove in three runs. He scored two runs in each game and drew three walks in game two.
Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) hit home runs on the day. Parlier's was a two-run shot in game one and Brown launched a three-run shot in game two. Parlier had two RBI in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 12, UWEC 4
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) drew a leadoff walk in the first.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) was hit by a pitch and
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) drew a base on balls to load the bases. A double play erased two runners, but got UWSP on the board. Tomczak roped a double down the left field line to make it 2-0.
After UWEC tied the game at 2-2,
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) hit a double to start the second inning and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) grounded out and drove in Soule to give the Pointers the lead back.
Oliver and Brown drew consecutive walks to start the third. Tomczak doubled again to drive in one run. Parlier walked to load the bases and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) hit a double to push home two runs. Soule reached on an error and another run scored. Fink reached on a bunt single to reload the bases. Adams hit a sac fly driving in one. A wild pitch plated another as UWSP went ahead, 9-2.
Tomczak hit his third double of the game, an infield double. Parlier followed with a two-run home run to left, the first dinger of his career.
Argersinger raced to second on a throwing error to begin the seventh and moved to third on a wild pitch. Oliver drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Two batters later, Tomczak grounded out to drive in the final run of the game.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) earned the win with 6.0 innings in the start. He struck out three.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) earned the save with 3.0 scoreless frames. He also struck out three.
Game 2 – UWSP 8, UWEC 1
Oliver hit a leadoff single in the second inning. Parlier was hit by a pitch. After a double play, Olson was also hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Soule singled to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
Tomczak coaxed a walk with one down in the third. Argersinger and Oliver both singled to load the bases. Parlier was hit by a pitch to push home one. Brown singled to plate another and Olson hit a sac fly for a 4-0 advantage.
Tomczak drew another walk with one away in the sixth. He moved to second on a balk. Two batters later, Oliver was hit by a pitch. Parlier singled to drive in one. Brown followed with a three-run blast to right-center and the lead was 8-1.
Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) went 7.0 innings in the start and had a no-hitter into the fourth. He fanned five and allowed just four hits and one unearned run.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego) and
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) each pitched a scoreless frame in relief.
The Pointers remain at home to take of UW-Stout. The weekend series begins on Saturday (April 12) at 12:00 p.m.
