PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (7-11, 3-5) split again at UW-Platteville (7-9, 2-6) to close out the series. UWSP got a run-rule win, 16-3, in game one before dropping game two, 8-4.
In the game one win, all nine starters had at least one hit and at least one run scored.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) collected four hits.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West),
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego),
Landon Parlier (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had two hits each. Tomczak led the way with three RBI, including a two-run home run.
In game two, the seven different Pointers combined to draw 15 bases on balls, one shy of the program single-game record. Parlier had a team-best four walks in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 16, UWP 3 (8 inn.)
The Pointers sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. The walks and five hits, all singles, and two UWP errors led to the seven-run inning.
Brown singled with one away in the second. Tomczak and Parlier drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Olson and Soule hit back-to-back singles as the Pointers tacked on two runs for a 9-0 lead.
Parlier doubled to start the sixth. Soule drew a walk and
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) was hit by a itch to load the bases.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) hit a sac fly for the first run of the frame. Argersinger singled to plate another. A double steal gave UWSP a 12-0 lead.
The Pioneers extended the game with three runs on five hits, four with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh.
Adams singled with one away in the eighth. Argersinger followed with a single and a fielding error led to a run.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) hit a single to drive in another. Two batters later, Tomczak hit a two-run home run for the 16-3 advantage.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 6.0 innings to get his first win of the season. He struck out nine.
Jacob Borchert (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin) and
Nathan Krommenakker (Rudolph, Wis./Lincoln) each pitched an inning in relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWP 8
The Pioneers scored two run in the first inning on three hits. UWP added six more runs in the second inning on three hits and a UWSP error.
Brown got UWSP's first hit of the game, a leadoff single in the fourth. Tomczak and Olson each drew a walk to load the bases. Soule hit a sac fly, but UWSP left the bases loaded with just one run pushed home in the frame.
Argersinger hit a leadoff double in the fifth. With two away Tomczak, Parlier and Olson drew consecutive walks to plate a run. Again, UWSP left the bases loaded.
The Pointers loaded the bases in the eighth with Parlier and Soule each drawing a walk around an Olson single.
In the ninth, Oliver and Brown coaxed consecutive walks. Two batters later, Parlier drew his fourth walk of the game to load the bases. An error gave UWSP a run. Soule hit a sac fly for another. But UWSP left the bases loaded for the fourth time to end the game.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) lasted just 1.1 innings in the start.
Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in relief with one strikeout.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) and
Braylen Nystrom (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
The Pointers host UW-Eau Claire in the home opener on Wednesday (April 9). First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Zimmermann Field.
