STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (12-12, 8-6) took both games on Sunday to win the series against UW-Stout (9-15, 7-7). The Pointers took game one, 7-5, before finishing the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two.
Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) recorded two hits in each game and drew two walks in game two. He drove in a run in game one and scored in each game.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig),
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) also each had a two-hit game on the day. Adams, in game one, and Olson, in game two, had two RBI games as well.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, Stout 5
Stout scored two unearned runs in the first inning to put UWSP in an early 2-0 hole.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) and
Brennan Huber (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) drew consecutive one-out walks in the second. Martell reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners. A double steal plated a run as the Pointers cut the deficit in half.
Martell began the fourth with a single. He moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a double by Adams.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) singled to put runners on the corners. Argersinger lifted a sac fly and UWSP took a 3-2 lead.
Huber singled with one away in the fifth. Two batters later,
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) reached on a bunt single. Adams singled to push in a run for a 4-2 advantage.
Tomczak drew a walk to lead off the sixth. Argersinger singled and
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) drew a walk to load the bases. Olson also drew a walk to push in one run. Oliver hit a sac fly to drive home another. With two down, Martell singled to plate another for a 7-3 lead.
Stout got two runs on two hits and a UWSP miscue to cut the lead to 7-5.
Steven Wintheiser (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) got the win with 6.0 innings in the start. He struck out two.
Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) earned the win with 2.0 shutout frames in relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 7, Stout 3
Adams reached on an error to start the first. Tomczak singled to put runners on the corners. Argersinger drove in a run with a sac bunt. With two down, Olson hit a single to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Martell began the second with a walk. He moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a single by Ramirez. Back-to-back fielder's choices with a Stout error loaded the bases. A passed ball gave UWSP a 3-1 lead.
Ramirez walked to start the fourth. Adams reached on a bunt single and both runners moved into scoring position on an error. Another Stout error allowed the first run of the inning to score. Argersinger moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) hit a sac fly and UWSP led, 5-1.
Martell doubled off the wall in left to begin the fifth. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sac fly by Ramirez for a 6-1 lead.
Andrew Chapman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) singled to start the sixth. Argersinger walked to put two aboard. Two batters later, Olson singled to put UWSP ahead, 7-2.
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) went 4.0 innings in the start and struck out two.
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) struck out two in 3.0 innings of relief to pick up the win.
Drew Kloster (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief with three combined strikeouts.
The Pointers travel to Ripon for a single non-conference game on Wednesday (April 16) at 3:00 p.m.
