DECATUR, Ill. – Senior
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit her 14th career triple and
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) hit a walk-off single as the No. 22 UW-Stevens Point softball team (11-1) finished the weekend undefeated. UWSP got a 6-3 win over host Millikin (2-5) before the walk-off win in the ninth against DePauw (5-4) by a 5-4 final.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) had four hits on the day with three runs scored.
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community),
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran),
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Klicker all collected three hits on the day. Klicker had an RBI in each game. Thompson had a hit in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 6, Millikin 3
The Pointers kept up the patience at the plate from Friday's record-setting game and the first 5 UWSP hitters drew a walk to begin the game for an early 2-0 lead.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) had RBI groundouts and UWSP was up, 4-0, after a half inning.
The Big Blue got three runs back in the second on four hits.
Schmidt singled with two down in the third.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) doubled to right-center as Schmidt raced home from first for a 5-3 advantage.
In the fourth, Thompson hit a two-out double. Klicker singled up the middle to give UWSP a 6-3 lead.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) got the win with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) earned her second save of the weekend against the Big Blue with 2.0 scoreless frames.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, DePauw 4 (9 inn.)
Holberg led off the second with a single. She moved to second on a sac bunt by Cibrario. Pinch runner
Parker Zipperer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) reached third on a fielder's choice with Otto reaching first on the play. A double steal saw Zipperer race home for a 1-0 lead.
Roberts singled to start the third inning. Baker followed with a single. Both runners stole and Roberts came home on an error. Two batters later, Klicker hit her record-setting triple to plate another and put the Pointers up, 3-0. Holberg followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0.
DePauw broke up Harwood's perfect game bid with a walk and a single in the fourth, but Harwood held DePauw off the board.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the sixth with three runs on two hits and a walk. DePauw tied the game in the seventh with one run on three hits.
In the bottom of the ninth, Roberts was placed on second and move to third on a sac bunt by Baker. Thompson followed with a single to left-center as the Pointers walked-off to finish the weekend.
Harwood pitched 8.0 innings with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. She allowed just two hits and no runs.
The Pointers are next in action at the Spring Games in Florida beginning with a 2:00 p.m. ET matchup against Fredonia on Mar. 17.
