CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 19 UW-Stevens Point softball team (13-1) extended its win streak to 12 with a 9-1 win over Fredonia (1-2) followed by a 7-2 victory over Buffalo State (0-4) to begin play in Florida on Monday.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had four hits on the day, two in each game. She drove in five, all in game two, including a three-run home runs. She scored three runs on the day.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) also had four hits, three in game one. She had one RBI.
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) and
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) each had three hits on the day. Baker scored four runs and drove in one. Smith had an RBI and a run scored.
Game 1 – UWSP 9, Fredonia 1 (6 inn.)
Baker drew a walk with one away in the bottom of the first. Thompson followed with a single to put runners at the corners.
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) gave UWSP a lead with a sac fly.
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) drew a walk to continue the frame. She stole second and a wild pitch allowed a run to score for a 2-0 lead.
Klicker reached on an error to start the third. Wild pitches before and after Holberg reached on a fielder's choice put two in scoring position. Sophie Heckendorf drove in a run with a sac fly. Otto followed with an RBI single to push the advantage to 4-0.
Paige Kislow (Weston, Wis./D.C. Everest) pinch ran for Otto and moved to third on a single by
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper). Kislow stole home to make it 5-0.
Fredonia manufactured a run in the fifth on a walk, sac bunt and a single, the lone hit of the game for the Blue Devils.
Smith doubled with one out in the fifth. Otto singled and Smith scored on a throwing error on the play.
Baker started the sixth with a single. Another Fredonia error allowed Thompson to reach. Two batters later, Holberg ripped a two-run single to right-center pushing home both runners.
Amelia Brinkman (New Richmond, WIs./New Richmond) pinch ran and moved to second on an infield single by Heckendorf. Smith hit a double to push Brinkman home for the run-rule win.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) went 4.1 innings to earn the win. She struck out nine and allowed just one hit.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) picked up the save with four strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
Game 2 – UWSP 7, Buffalo State 2
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) began the game with a single. Baker followed with a base hit as well. Thompson then launched a home run to left for an early 3-0 lead.
The Bengals snapped Harwood's no-hit bid in the fourth. An error in the inning helped Buffalo State get an unearned run to close with within 3-1.
Roberts singled to start the fifth. Baker doubled as Roberts raced home for the first run of the frame. Thompson moved Baker to third with a groundout. Klicker reached on a bunt single as another run scored.
Otto reached on a throwing error with one away in the sixth. She moved to second on a wild pitch. Roberts was hit by a pitch and Baker drew a walk to load the bases. Thompson laced a single to center to push in two runs for a 7-1 lead.
The Bengals got a run on two hits in the seventh to complete the scoring.
Harwood went 4.0 innings in the start. She struck out three and gave up just one hit.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) picked up the save with 3.0 innings. She struck out five.
The Pointers are back in action on Tuesday (March 18) with a 2:00 p.m. ET game against Rowan and a 4:15 p.m. ET matchup against Plymouth State.
