ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (0-2) started the season with a pair of losses at Washington University (7-1) on Saturday to open the season. The Pointers were shut out, 5-0, in the opener before a 10-9 walk-off loss in game two.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) collected four hits on the day, three in game one. He scored a run in game two.
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) had three hits each. Oliver had all three in game two and he drove in two runs. Olson had two hits in game two and drove in three.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) had a hit in each game and scored twice in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, WashU 5
Argersinger had hits in the second and the seventh.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Olson each had a hit in the third, but UWSP couldn't break through.
WashU finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth with a run on two hits and a sac fly. The Bears tacked on three more in the seventh to take a 4-0 lead. WashU added a run in the eighth on consecutive doubles.
Argersinger again singled to start the ninth, but the Pointers were unable to score a run in the opener.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) tossed 5.0 shutout frames in the start. He struck out five.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH) had a strikeout in 2.0 innings of work.
Easton Zempel (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) made his UWSP debut and struck out one in an inning of work.
Game 2 – UWSP 9, WashU 10
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) drew a walk to lead off the second inning. Argersinger reached on an error and both runner moved into scoring position.
Brennan Huber (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) hit a sac fly to tie the game at 1-1. Oliver ripped a double down the left field line to give UWSP a 2-1 lead.
Adams singled to start the third. He stole second and scored on a double by Olson. Soule followed with a double and UWSP was up 4-1.
Tomczak reached on an error to begin the fifth. Olson walked and Tomczak moved to third on fly out to right. A balk pushed a run home. Argersinger was hit by a pitch and a double steal put two in scoring position. Huber drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Oliver doubled to plate another and the Pointers were ahead, 7-1, in the fifth.
WashU got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth and added two more in the sixth in the sixth to get within 7-6.
Oliver drew a leadoff walk in the eighth. Two batters later,
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew a walk. With two down,
Isaac Beeler (Austin, Texas/Westlake) was intentionally walked and Olson followed with a two-run single to up the lead to 9-6.
The Bears walked off with four runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the ninth.
Bryce Ehr (Plover, Wis./SPASH) went 4.0 in the start with five strikeouts.
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) worked 2.0 in the relief.
Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) struck out four over the final 2.1 innings.
The Pointers and Bears wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday (Mar. 9) at 12:00 p.m.
