DAVENPORT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (3-4) split a doubleheader against Hope (5-9) on Tuesday. UWSP fell in game one, 9-7, before winning game two, 8-4, in 10 innings.
Cooper Brown (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) and
Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) each hit a home run on the day. Soule had three RBI and scored twice in game two.
Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central) had three RBI on the day. Brown and
Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) had three hits each on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, Hope 9 (7 inn.)
Hope scored seven runs in the second inning on three hits, two walks, a hit batter and an error.
In the bottom of the second,
Brennan Huber (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln),
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua),
Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) and
Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew consecutive walks to push home a run.
Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) hit a sac fly to plate another as UWSP got within 7-2.
Hope got the two runs back in the fourth on two hits and an error.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was hit by a pitch to start the fifth. Olson singled and Soule drew a walk to load the bases. Argersinger drove in two with a single. Huber and Fink drew walks to plate another run.
Colton Martell (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) was hit by a pitch pushing home another as UWSP cut the deficit to 9-6.
Brown hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but UWSP could draw no closer in the pre-scheduled seven-inning game.
Kenny Schultz (Plover, Wis./SPASH),
Drew Kloster (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and
JT Hockers (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) combined for six strikeouts in the game.
Game 2 – UWSP 8, Hope 4 (10 inn.)
Tomczak drew a base on balls to start the third inning. Olson was hit by a pitch. Soule hit a double to score the first run. Argersinger drove in another on a groundout and Martell gave UWSP a 3-0 lead with a sac fly.
Hope scored one run in the bottom of the third and put up three runs in the sixth to put UWSP behind, 4-3.
Martell and Oliver drew one-out walks in the seventh. Brown singled to push home the tying run.
The game remained tied until the 10th. Adams singled to start the frame and moved to second on a passed ball. Huber doubled to drive him home. Two batters later, Olson singled to drive in a run. Soule followed with a two-run home run as UWSP took an 8-4 lead.
Easton Zempel (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) picked up his first win for the Pointers. He combined with
Josh Steger (Lomira, Wis./Lomira),
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego),
Jeremiah Jahnke (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) and
Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) for eight strikeouts in the game.
The Pointers face Ramapo on Thursday (March 20) at 3:30 p.m. ET.
