Pointers Split Pair of Shutouts on Day Two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point softball team (14-2) split a pair of shutouts on Tuesday with both ending in six-inning run-rules. The Pointers dropped game one to No. 4 Rowan (15-0) by a 10-0 final before shutting out Plymouth State (6-2) by a final of 8-0.
 
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) continued to excel in the circle posting her fourth combined shutout of the year and fifth scoreless appearance to improve to 6-0. She struck out eight in the win over PSU.
 
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) was the only Pointer to hit safely in both games. She had three hits on the day with two RBI and a run scored. Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) and Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) each had a pair of hits against the Panthers and combined for three RBI.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 0, Rowan 10 (6 inn.)
Rowan got on the board in the second inning with two runs on two hits, two walks and an error.
 
Smith singled to start the third inning. She moved to second on a sac bunt, but was stranded there as the inning ended without a UWSP run.
 
Rowan put up three runs in the fourth on two hits and another UWSP miscue.
 
The Pointers got a runner aboard in the fourth as Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) was hit by a pitch and again in the fifth with Smith drawing a walk. UWSP was unable to get a run in either frame.
 
Rowan put up five runs in the sixth on four hits, two walks, two hit batters and an error.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and Caitlin Hartsell (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) combined for 10 strikeouts for the Pointers.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 8, Plymouth State 0 (6 inn.)
Baker drew a one-out walk in the first and stole second. Thompson doubled to put two in scoring position. Smith cleared the bases with a triple to the wall in right field for a 2-0 lead.
 
Schmidt started the second with a single. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached on a bunt single and both runners moved up on a sac bunt. Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drove in a run with a groundout. Baker walked and stole second again. Thompson stepped up and ripped a single up the middle pushing home two as UWSP went up, 5-0.
 
Smith doubled to begin the sixth inning. Pinch hitter Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) reached on a single. Both runners stole bases into scoring position. Schmidt singled through the left side to plate one. Otto dropped another bunt and the Pointers scored a run on the fielder's choice. Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) drove in another run with an RBI groundout for the 8-0 advantage.
 
Rizzo held the Panthers to just one hit, a leadoff single in the third, over 4.0 frames in the start. Harwood tossed the final 2.0 innings and struck out three.
 
The Pointers return to play on Thursday (March 20) with a 4:15 p.m. ET game against Ramapo followed by a 6:15 p.m. ET tilt against Simpson.
