CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 16 UW-Stevens Point softball team (15-3) saw both games end in walk-offs on the Thursday in Florida. UWSP won by a 5-4 final in eight innings against Ramapo (8-1) before Simpson (10-2) dealt UWSP a 6-5 loss in walk-off fashion in the night cap.
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville),
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel),
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) and
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) each hit safely in both games. Roberts drove in three on the day and scored twice. Klicker drove in a run in each game as did
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead).
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) was marvelous in the circle striking out 13 on the day over 8.1 innings. She allowed just one run against Ramapo and tossed 4.1 no-hit frames versus Simpson.
Game 1 – UWSP 5, Ramapo 4 (8 inn.)
The Roadrunners quickly got on the board with a single and a double in succession for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Cibrario singled with one out the third inning. Roberts followed with a two-run home run to left to put UWSP in front, 2-1.
Ramapo tied the game with a run in the sixth and took the lead with another in the seventh.
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Pinch runner
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) moved to second on a sac bunt. Otto singled through the left side pushing Rizzo home to tie the game.
Ramapo plated the placed runner in the top of the eighth on a sac fly.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A fielding error loaded the bases for the Pointers. A wild pitch plated the tying run. Klicker then followed with a walk-off single to the gap in right-center.
Harwood struck out five in the start.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 4.0 and had six strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Simpson 6
Simpson got four hits and a walk in the first five plate appearances to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Cibrario started the third inning with a single. Two batters later, Baker was hit by a pitch. Thompson singled to score the first run of the frame. Klicker singled plating another run.
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) reached on a fielder's choice as the tying run scored. Consecutive walks to Sophie Heckendorf and Otto pushed home the go-ahead run for a 4-3 lead.
Otto reached on an error to begin the sixth. She moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a double by Roberts for a 5-3 advantage.
The lead held until the bottom of the seventh. A one-out home run got Simpson within a run. A bunt single, stolen base and a groundout got the tying run to third. An intentional walk ended up at second as Simpson got two in scoring position with two outs. A chopper to short got through and Simpson completed the walk-off.
Harwood fanned eight in 4.1 hitless innings. Rizzo struck out one. Zygowski had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
The Pointers close out play in Florida on Friday (March 21) with a 2:00 p.m. ET game against New England and a 4:30 p.m. ET finale against Keuka.
