Pointers’ Offense Heats Up in Florida Opener, All Nine with RBI

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (1-3) opened play at the RussMatt Invitational with an offensive onslaught in a 19-9 run-rule win over Illinois Tech (3-5) on Sunday.

All nine starters in the UWSP lineup had at least one RBI. Nick Argersinger (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central), Brennan Huber (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) each drove in three. Connor Olson (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Tino Ramirez (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Tyler Soule (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) had two RBI apiece. Oliver had four hits on the day. Argersinger, Soule and Mason Fink (Verona, Wis./Verona) each had a three-hit day.

After trailing 1-0 on an unearned run in the top of the first, the Pointers mounted a big two-out rally in the bottom of the frame. Olson drew a walk with two away to start the rally. Soule and Argersinger hit consecutive singles to tie the game at 1-1. Huber, Oliver and Fink hit three-straight doubles and UWSP led 5-1 after one.

IIT got two runs back in the second inning and another in third to pull within a run of UWSP. The Hawks plated four more in the fourth to put the Pointers in an 8-5 hole.

Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth. Olson replaced him at first on fielder's choice. Soule clubbed a ground-rule double to left-center to put two in scoring position. Argersinger ripped a double into left-center to drive in both runners. Huber drew a walk and Oliver followed with a double to plate two more for a 9-8 lead.

Ramirez started the fifth with a double. He moved to third on a sac bunt and, two batters later, scored on a wild pitch.

IIT got a run back in the sixth as three-consecutive singles loaded the bases. A sac bunt to plate the single run was the only damage for the Hawks as UWSP maintained a 10-9 advantage.

Huber led off the bottom of the sixth with a booming home run, the first of his career. Oliver followed with a double. He moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on a sac fly as UWSP went up, 12-9.

Tomczak reached on an infield single to start the seventh. An errant pick-off throw got Tomczak to third. A sac fly by Soule pushed the lead to 13-9.

The Pointers walked-off in the eighth as eight batted and no outs were recorded by IIT pitching. Huber walked, Oliver and Fink singled to load the bases. Walks to Ramirez, Jackson Adams (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) and Tomczak each plated a run. Olson hit a ground-rule double to plate two more. Soule hit a single down the leftfield line to finish the run-rule win.

Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) started and struck out three over 3.1 innings. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego), Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) and Joe Schneider (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had a strikeout apiece over the next 3.2. Isaiah Piscitello (Wausau, Wis./West) tossed a perfect frame in the eighth.

The Pointers will face MSOE on Monday (March 17) with a 2:00 p.m. ET first pitch in Florida.
