ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—The UW-Stevens Point women's lacrosse team (0-4) nearly completed a comeback against Augustana College (4-3), but ultimately fell short, 15-13.
Augustana held the Pointers from scoring in the first quarter, while the home team scored four to secure a lead going into the second quarter.
At 12:45 in the second quarter,
Josie Voigt (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) recorded her first collegiate goal off an assist from
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove), making it a 4-1 game.
Barrie Bahr (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and
Aubrey Keeping (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead) each found the back of the net unassisted, to cut Augustana's lead to one goal. Augustana answered back with a goal at 8:36 to make it 5-3. With 7:58 remaining in the second quarter,
Marissa Van Dyke (Green Bay, Wis./Green Bay Southwest) found the back of the net for the first time, unassisted, to be within one goal for a second time in the quarter. Just 20 seconds later, Keeping scored her ninth goal of the season off an assist from Leising to tie the game at five each. Augustana scored three goals in the last five minutes to take back the lead, going up, 8-5, into halftime.
Van Dyke started the third quarter off with an early goal from Leising to make it an 8-6 game. Augustana scored two goals before Van Dyke found Bahr for her second goal of the game at 9:01 in the third quarter making it 10-7. Bahr scored her third goal of the game at 7:38 off an assist from Keeping, to make it 11-8. Leising recorded her fourth assist of the game at 5:20 in the third quarter when Keeping found the back of the net to cut Augustana's lead to two. Van Dyke and Leising rounded out the third quarter the same way they started, to get UWSP within one goal going into the fourth quarter.
Augustana scored early in the fourth quarter to make it 12-10. Keeping found Van Dyke at 14:12 to make it a 12-11 game. Augustana scored a free-position goal at 12:22 to make it 13-11. Leising scored a shorthanded goal to be within one goal with 9:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. Van Dyke rounded out the Pointers offense at 5:41 with an unassisted goal to make it 13-14.
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) was in goal with 18 saves in 60 minutes of play.
The UWSP women's lacrosse team remains in Illinois to take on Elmhurst on Monday (Mar. 17). Opening Draw is set for 6:00 p.m.
