STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Sean Bunting (Phoenix, Ariz.) had his first career hat trick as the No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (17-5-1, 9-3-1) shut out Northland (1-22-0, 0-13-0) by a 5-0 final.
Chris Engelbert (Whitby, Ont.) got the Pointers on the board at 5:20 of the first period. Dawsin Sciarrino had the only assist on the play.
Just over two minutes later, Bunting scored his first of the night. Hunter O-Brien and
Gino Colangelo (Newmarket, Ont.) got assists on the play.
Peyton Hart (Delafield, Wis.) gave the Pointers a 3-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 16:01 of the first period.
Bunting tallied a pair of power-play goals in the second period to complete his hat trick. His first came at the 1:42 mark with
Owen Dean (Calgary, Alberta) and
Quinton Hill (Coquitlam, B.C.) assisting on the goal. Engelbert had the lone assist on his hat trick goal at 8:08 of the second.
UWSP goaltenders
Alex Proctor (Allen, Texas) and
Matthias Smith (Courtenay, B.C.) combined to make 15 saves in the shutout. NC goaltender Dakota Meyer had 37 saves.
The Pointers will travel to UW-Superior for a weekend series to determine the WIAC regular season champion. Game one is on Friday (Feb. 14) at 7:00 p.m.
