STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (11-11-1, 5-4-1) clinched a bye in the WIAC Tournament with a 5-3 win over UW-Superior (1-8-0) on Friday afternoon.
The visiting Yellowjackets struck first with an opening goal at 6:26 of the first period.
The Pointers turned the tide with a shorthanded goal by
Katie Stanius (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) at 15:46 of the first.
Molly Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) provided the assist on the game-tying goal.
At 18:50 of the first,
Soile Doyle (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) gave the Pointers the lead with a power-play goal.
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Pohlkamp had assists as UWSP took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
UWS tied the game at 10:19 of the second period. Leising gave the Pointers the lead again heading to the third with a tally at 17:38 with Pohlkamp notching her third assist of the game.
The seesaw affair saw the Yellowjackets tie the game again at 4:22 of the third period.
The game remained tied until the 17:30 mark of the third period.
Natalie Ahern (Byron, Minn./Byron) ripped a game-winner with
Avery Engbrecht (Winona, Minn./Winona) providing the helper.
Leising added an empty-net goal with 48.7 seconds left to seal the win.
UWSP goaltender
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) made 28 saves in the win. UWS goaltender Anna Maulson had 21 saves.
The Pointers and Yellowjackets conclude the season series on Saturday (Feb. 8). Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at K.B. Willett Arena.
