STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After an inauspicious start, the No. 10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (16-5-1, 8-3-1) scored eight unanswered goals for an 8-2 win over Northland (1-21-0, 0-12-0).
The visiting Lumberjacks jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals at 57 seconds and 2:16 of the first period.
Nico Chmelevski (Northville, Mich.) got the Pointers on the board at 4:46 of the first to extend his point streak to nine-straight.
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and
Adam Rajsigl (Windsor, Ont.) had assists.
Anderson tied the game at 6:58 with a power-play goal.
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa.) and
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont.) had assists on the play.
Blake Norris (Warroad, Minn.) put the Pointers in front with the eventual game-winner at 14:25 of the first. Chmelevski and
Michael Eftimovski (Toronto, Ont.) provided assists.
Sean Bunting (Phoenix, Ariz.) pushed the lead to 4-2 at 17:56 of the first.
Quinton Hill (Coquitlam, B.C.) had an assist as he won the draw to Bunting who fired the shot into the net.
Owen Dean (Calgary, Alberta) scored at 5:39 of the second period.
Chris Engelbert (Whitby, Ont.) and Sciarrino had helpers on the play.
Tyler German (Canton, Mich.) and Poulias each scored a shorthanded goal within a 17-second span.
Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn.) had the assist on German's goal. Chmelevski notched his third point of the night with a helper on Poulias' tally.
Joshua German (Waterford, Mich.) was the eighth different goal scorer for the Pointers when he scored at 14:44 of the second. Dean and Poulias had assists on the power-play goal.
Neither team scored in the third period.
Ryan Maguire (Ridgefield, Conn.) made nine saves in the first two period.
Matthias Smith (Courtenay, B.C.) made his season debut and had five saves in the third period. NC goaltenders Andrew Yocum and Dakota Meyer combined for 37 saves.
The Pointers host Northland on Saturday (Feb. 8) for Senior Day. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Fans will not be allowed to park on the street as the City of Stevens Point has issued a
snow emergency beginning at 12:00 p.m.
