RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (14-6, 4-5) dug out of an early hole, but fell in overtime, 66-61, at UW-River Falls (12-8, 4-5) on Wednesday night.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) recorded her third-straight double-double with a team-high 14 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) nearly had a double-double of her own with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) was also in double figures with 13 points.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill), Gawlitta,
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) and
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) each made a basket, but the Pointers were in a 22-8 hole after one.
Rice and Gawlitta combined for nine early points as the Pointers started with a 9-0 run in the second. Smith nailed a three late and the Pointers were down just two, 28-26, at the break.
Thomson, Smith and Krueger totalled four made threes in the third quarter and the Pointers held a 45-44 edge heading to the fourth.
Thomson had six points early in the fourth as the Pointers built a five-point lead with 7:25 to go. Gawlitta made a game-tying layup with 21 seconds remaining as both teams made just one field goal in the final five minutes.
In overtime, Rice hit a jumper to halt a 5-0 start by the Falcons. Thomson nailed a three, but the Pointers could catch back up.
The Pointers are home on Saturday (Feb. 8) for the Play4Kay Game against UW-Platteville. Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m. in Berg Gym and silent auction items will be available in the lobby.
