Harwood, Rizzo Combine for No-Hitter, Pointers Shut Out Ripon Twice

RHINELANDER, Wis. – Sophomore Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and freshman Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) combined for a no-hitter as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point softball team (5-1) shut out Ripon (0-2) twice in a doubleheader sweep on Thursday. UWSP got an 8-0 five-inning win in the game one no-hitter and swept the twin bill with a 5-0 win in game two.
 
Harwood notched her third career no-hitter with six strikeouts in 3.0 perfect frames. Rizzo struck out four in the final 2.0.
 
Offensively Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) was 5-for-5 on the day with two home runs. She was 2-for-2 in game one with two RBI and two runs scored. She was 3-for-3 in game two with two more RBI.
 
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community), Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) and Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) all hit safely in both games. Smith had three hits, two RBI and a runs scored. Thompson scored two runs in each game and had an RBI. Baker scored once in each game.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 8, Ripon 0 (5 inn.)
Thompson doubled with two away in the bottom of the first. Klicker then belted a two-run home run to center for a 2-0 lead.
 
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and Smith singled back-to-back to start the second. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) had an RBI groundout to extend the advantage to 3-0.
 
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) hit a leadoff single in the third. Baker followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Thompson reached on a fielder's choice. Klicker drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, a Ripon error opened the door to a big inning. Smith was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Otto singled to drive home two and the lead was 7-0 after three.
 
Klicker singled to begin the fifth. Consecutive fielder's choices put Cibrario at first with two away. Smith launched a double to right and Cibrario scored from first to end the game.
 
Harwood and Rizzo were dominant combining for 10 strikeouts of the 17 batters faced.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Ripon 0
Baker doubled with one away in the first inning. Two batters later, Klicker singled to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
 
Cibrario was hit by the first pitch of the second inning. Smith singled to put two aboard. Two batters later, Maddie Hernandez (St. Charles, Ill./North) recorded her first career hit with an RBI single.
 
Thompson and Klicker hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the third inning to push the lead to 4-0.
 
Thompson drew a walk to begin the fifth. Klicker singled and both runners moved up on a groundout. Cibrario drove in a run with a groundout to the right side for a 5-0 lead.
 
Caitlin Hartsell (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) struck out six in 3.0 innings in the start. She allowed just one hit. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 4.0 with seven strikeouts with just one hit allowed.
 
The Pointers take on Lawrence in a doubleheader in Rhinelander on Friday (Feb. 28). First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. in the Hodag Dome.
