RHINELANDER, Wis. – Senior
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) extended her home run streak to four games with a long ball in both games as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point softball team (7-1) swept Lawrence (0-2) on Friday. The Pointers took game one, 5-1, before Klicker's walk-off home run gave UWSP a 10-2 run-rule victory in six innings in game two.
Klicker was 4-for-5 on the day with home runs in both games. She drove in five runs and scored three others and had a stolen base in each game.
Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) had a hit in each game and drove in three on the day. She swiped a pair of bases as well.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and
Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) each had three hits on the day.
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) had two hits in game two with three RBI.
Game 1 – UWSP 5, Lawrence 1
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) singled to start the third inning.
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) followed with a single and a double steal put both runners in scoring position. Thompson dropped a successful squeeze bunt to get UWSP on the board. Klicker hit a sac fly and the Pointers took a 2-0 lead.
Lawrence got on the board in the fifth inning turning a leadoff walk into a run with just one hit in the frame.
Klicker hit the first pitch of the sixth inning out to left for a solo home run to push the advantage to 3-1. Smith followed with a single and she moved to second on a sac bunt by
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper). Two batters later,
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a walk. Holberg ripped a double to the fence in right-center plating both runners.
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) went 4.0 innings in the start and extended her scoreless streak to start her career to 19-straight frames. She struck out four and gave up just two hits.
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) got the save with 3.0 innings and five strikeouts.
Game 2 – UWSP 10, Lawrence 2 (6 inn.)
The Vikings got on the board in the first inning with a one-out walk and a two run home run, the only hit of game two by Lawrence.
Roberts was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first. Baker doubled to put two in scoring position. Thompson singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Smith double to put two in scoring position again. Cibrario grounded to second, but a fielding error allowed both runners to score for a 4-2 lead.
Klicker singled to begin the third inning. She stole second and scored on a single by Holberg.
Thompson led off the fifth with a single. She scored all the way from first on a double by Klicker for a 6-2 lead.
Otto launched a solo home run on the first pitch of the sixth inning. Heckendorf singled and Roberts walked. Both stole to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Thompson drove in a run with a ground out. Klicker followed a drilled a home run to center for the walk-off win.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) picked up the win with 4.0 innings of one-hit ball in the start. She struck out seven. Harwood notched her second save of the day with 2.0 hitless frames. She struck out four.
The Pointers head to the Millikin Invite beginning on Mar. 8. UWSP faces Hope at 11:30 a.m. and host Millikin at 4:30 p.m.
