Pointers Score Seven in Each to Sweep in Illinois

PEORIA, Ill. – The No. 23 UW-Stevens Point softball team (3-1) swept games on day two of the Blue Angel Invite on Friday. The Pointers started the day with a 7-2 win over Edgewood (0-3) before shutting out Elmhurst (0-1) by a 7-0 final.
 
Kaitlyn Roberts (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville), Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) and Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) each had a three-hit game on the day. Roberts and Klicker collected four hits. Klicker and Baker each hit a home run against Elmhurst. Baker scored four runs and drove in three on the day. Klicker had four RBI and Roberts scored three times on the day.
 
Hailee Thompson (Bonduel, Wis./Bonduel) and Sawyer Holberg (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) had two runs batted in each in game one against Edgewood.
 
Game 1 - UWSP 7, Edgewood 2
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) led off the third with a solid single to left. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners in scoring position for the Pointers. Two batters later, Baker drove in the first run with a single to center. Klicker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thompson singled two plate two. Holberg followed with two more RBI. With two away, Ella Smith (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) recorded her first collegiate hit to drive in pinch runner Parker Zipperer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) for a 6-0 lead.
 
The Eagles broke up the shutout bid with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning to cut UWSP's lead to 6-2.
 
In the sixth, Roberts singled with two away. She stole second and the throw sailed off the glove of a fielder into right-center and Roberts scored on the play to make it 7-2.
 
Morgan Harwood (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) earned her first win of the season with 4.1 innings of work in the start. She struck out seven. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched the final 2.2 IP and struck out four.
 
Game 2 - UWSP 7, Elmhurst 0
Roberts began the game with a single. Baker followed with a double to put two in scoring position. Thompson drove in a run with a sac fly. Klicker doubled to give UWSP a 2-0 lead.
 
Sophie Schmidt (Twin Lakes, Wis./Wilmot Union) led off the fifth with a pinch-hit single. Two batters later, Baker singled to put runners on the corners. With two down, Klicker launched a three-run home run to left for a 5-0 lead.
 
Roberts drew a leadoff walk in the seventh. Baker followed with a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 7-0 lead.
 
Kodi Rizzo (Newark, Ill./Newark Community) posted her second win and did not allow a run for the second-straight start. She went 6.0 innings and struck out nine, including one to strand the bases loaded in the fourth inning. She allowed just two hits. Caitlin Hartsell (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) threw a perfect seventh with one strikeout to secure the shutout.
 
The Pointers will face Ripon in a doubleheader on Thursday (Feb. 27) in Rhinelander. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
