STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (17-7, 7-6) never trailed in an 85-71 home win over No. 19 UW-Stout (18-6, 9-4) on Wednesday.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led the Pointers in scoring with 26 points and she had a double-double with 11 rebounds.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North),
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) and
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) were also in double figures with 18, 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Smith hit the first of her four three-point makes on the night and had five points as UWSP opened with a 9-2 lead. Thomson drilled a three late and UWSP led after the first, 18-14.
Smith and
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) each buried a three in the second as the Pointers maintained a multi-possession lead. Rice scored five straight and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) posted the final four points of the half as the lead was 41-30 at the half.
Thomson had seven points in the third quarter as UWSP kept the Blue Devils in a double-digit hole all quarter.
Smith nailed a pair of threes in the fourth and Thomson had 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Pointers kept a double-figure lead until the final buzzer.
The Pointers host UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 22) for Senior Day. Tip-off in the regular season finale is set for 3:00 p.m. Saturday's winner between UWSP and UWL will host a WIAC Tournament first-round game on Tuesday (Feb. 25).
